The Crew Cab Question Nobody Asks Until the Car Seat Won't Fit

Bob Smith Auto Sales September 8, 2026

There's a specific moment that sends a lot of East Texas families to a dealership: the day the rear-facing car seat won't fit behind the driver's seat without pushing the driver into the steering wheel.

Up to that point the truck was fine. Suddenly it isn't, and it has nothing to do with whether it runs well.

Why back seat space is hard to judge on paper

Manufacturer legroom numbers don't tell you how a car seat actually sits. What matters:

  • Whether the seat base is flat enough for a car seat to sit tight
  • How far forward the front seats have to move
  • Door opening width when you're lifting a sleeping kid out in the rain
  • Whether the middle seat is usable with two car seats installed

That's why the smartest thing you can do is bring the car seat with you. Put it in the vehicle. Buckle it. Then sit in front of it.

Three options families land on

Crew cab truck. Keeps the utility you already wanted and gives the back seat real room. Usually the most expensive option and the most versatile.

Three-row SUV. More seating, easier access, less towing capacity. Good if the truck bed was rarely used.

Larger two-row SUV. Enough for two kids and gear without paying for a third row you'll never fold up.

There's no universal answer. If you haul trailers or feed, the truck matters. If your truck bed has been empty for two years, an SUV usually buys you more comfort per dollar.

The trade you're probably sitting on

A well-kept truck with 100,000 miles is one of the strongest trade positions in this market. Trucks hold value in a way sedans don't, and Wood County buyers are constantly looking for exactly the truck you're about to outgrow. Get it appraised before you decide it's not worth much.
