What you actually need, by use case
Pulling a boat or camper: half-ton pickup with a known tow rating and a transmission that isn't tired. Ask for the service records.
Hauling hay, feed, or equipment: bed length and payload matter more than trim level. A long bed work truck beats a loaded short bed here.
Side work and job sites: reliability first. A two-wheel-drive truck with good tires handles most East Texas work; four-wheel drive earns its keep on muddy job sites and ranch roads.
Occasional big loads: a trailer and a mid-size truck often costs less than a heavy-duty truck you drive daily and don't need.
Buy for the 90 percent, rent for the 10
If you tow five times a year and commute 15,000 miles, buy for the commute and rent or borrow for the towing. If you tow most weekends between April and September, buy for the towing. Be honest about which one you are before you fall in love with a truck on the lot.
